The Wickaninnish Inn: An Oceanside Gem on Canada's Edge

A couple enjoying ocean views from The Pointe Restaurant, The Wickaninnish Inn, Vancouver Island

The Hotel’s Window

The 240-degree view of the Pacific Ocean from The Wickaninnish Inn is like a theatre showcasing the wonders of nature. The view is ever-changing as the weather comes in over the Pacific Ocean. During summer, the rolling surf or flat calm seas often provide sights of sea lions, gray whales, and orcas. Winter is the most exciting season to experience the West Coast, and the Wickaninnish Inn was designed specifically for this. As the seas come alive during the colder months, our favorite time to observe the power of the elements begins. Sitting in The Pointe Restaurant, watching the seabirds dancing in the wind and the massive waves crashing on the shoreline, often sending ocean spray on the windows, is an awe-inspiring experience that invigorates the soul.

Insider’s Knowledge

As we came across this singular British Columbia slice of heaven, we knew we had to dig in and grasp the formula that, since 1996, has been responsible for converting guests into passionate promoters for this secluded property. We turned to Ms. Shawna Gardham, who, with her eyes filled with enthusiasm and pride, unveiled the veil for us.

  • • The Pointe Restaurant has a sweeping 240-degree view of the lively Pacific Ocean. There is a microphone outside that pipes in the sounds of nature. Guests can enjoy the sunrise and sunset while watching the waves roll by. Local wildlife and surfers are a regular sight;

    • The Wickaninnish Inn property features two accommodations buildings, including Wickaninnish at the Pointe and Wickaninnish on the Beach. Each lobby has its own breathtaking views for guests to enjoy upon arrival: Wickaninnish on the Beach lobby with two-story windows overlooking Chesterman Beach and Wickaninnish at the Pointe lobby with floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the Pacific Ocean.

  • Each of the Wickaninnish Inn’s 75 guest rooms features an ocean or beach view, gas fireplace, and individual balcony. Each view is slightly different, but each gives guests a feeling of being one with nature with all the comforts of the indoors. Many return guests rebook their favorite room because of the unique view they love that provides serenity amidst the untamed wilderness.

    Some of the most coveted rooms are:

    Always alive and changing, the Pacific seascape will keep guests entranced for hours in the Premiers Rooms (109, 209, 309). These three corner rooms have west and south views, offering a wide perspective of the waves rolling in. Watch the sea lions and seabirds pass while you cozy in with your morning cuppa, and enjoy the breeze billowing by on your balcony. The spacious bathroom with ocean views makes getting ready for a night out—or a night in!—part of the coastal experience. One of the best rooms to watch mother nature put on a show during a winter storm or to catch the sunset over the Pacific Ocean.

    The Canopy Suite is the Inn's most exceptional accommodation in the Wickaninnish-on-the-Beach Building. With floor-to-ceiling windows stretching across the room, guests have a stunning panoramic view of Chesterman Beach and the Pacific Ocean. The suite’s living room area features a full wet bar and a romantic fireplace, inviting guests to relax in a serene atmosphere; in contrast, a visit to the private balcony is all about enjoying the salty wind sweeping in the fragrance of the beach from below. Wake up refreshed in the canopy-adorned King-size bed, and enjoy the stately bathroom with heated tile flooring, a double-soaker bathtub, and a multi-jet shower for two, all overlooking Chesterman Beach.

  • The Wickaninnish Inn was designed for storm watching, so many guests enjoy sitting in their guestroom by the gas fireplace with the patio door cracked slightly so the ocean sounds can surround them. At the same time, Mother Nature puts on a show of gale-force winds, giant waves, and lively skies.

  • “Mesmerizing.”

  • Rustic elegance on Nature's edge.
