Insider’s Knowledge
What is it like to experience those second-to-none views at Makumu Private Game Lodge? Why is this place so special for those seeking a genuine African experience? For some answers, we turned to Verena van Rooyen, a confessed fan of Makumu.
-
The floating boma and the entire main lodge area - upstairs and downstairs have uninterrupted views. A brainchild of the german-born Stefan Breuer (known to friends as the “barefoot bushman”), the elevated boma dominates the Leopard River and the endless plains, making it the ideal place to socialize, either over a candlelit dinner or around a fire under a dark, starry sky.
-
All our tribe’s inspired suites at Makumu offer expansive vistas. Our Ndebele suites, hogged by a palette of earthly colors and geometric shapes, have views over the Leopard River. The Zulu and The Bushman suites have views over the stone-carved pool and the watering hole where animals come to drink.

“Endless.”

All our dinners are hosted in the floating boma with picture-perfect views over the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve. We do offer private, romantic dinners by the pool as well. While out on game drives, we stop in the bush, where guests can enjoy refreshments and snacks while standing in the middle of the action, listening to the animal sounds, and enjoying the unmatched African sunset views. For guests wishing to play hide and seek with the surrounding wildlife, we offer a photographic bunker - the iThumbela; from this unique facility, guests are promised to take memorable photos (maybe rivaling National Geographic’s?) of lions, zebras, elephants, leopards, birds, and everything in between. The bunker is equipped with modern-day luxuries such as cold drinks, coffee/tea-making facilities, and even books and magazines if they choose to relax on the couch.
-
Over and above our finishes in the lodge, our service offering is the ultimate luxury. The breathtaking views and location of the lodge complement a deeply inspiring sense of space and place, leaving visitors rejuvenated with the ancient spirit of the African wilderness.
